This house is great for entertaining
High Blue Farm is an enchanting 1820’s home on a 2 acre lot between two open fields. Surrounding this Fortunes Rocks, Maine
property are 85 acres of conservancy land. Enjoy 5 bedrooms, 2 updated full baths, a dining room, updated kitchen, two porches, a double living room and an unfinished attic.
This handsome barn was built in 1947 by two brothers using horses to bring in the logs. A nearby mill turned out the strong timber used in its construction. The barn was designed to hold hay for the many dairy farms that once dotted rural Maine. A 2013 barn party was the occasion for many upgrades including new electric service, a new concrete floor, fresh paint and upgraded windows. Note the garage door for your car!
High Bush Blueberries
High Blue Farm is named after the blueberry bushes that grow along the edges of fields, they are taller than their low-bush cousins. This bush is about 7 feet high and loaded with berries! The low bush blueberries can be found in the fields after mowing, along with lots of strawberry plants. Both are delicious!
1942 2N ford tractor
The barn is home to a 1942 Ford tractor, with all the attachments, which still mows the adjacent fields each year .
wildlife
Extensive conservancy land is home to lots of wildlife, occassionally moose.
Bird Houses
Adjacent fields have numerous bird boxes, with red roofs from old barn shingles. They annually host blue birds and barn swallows
HIGH BLUE FARM
Named after the highbush blue berries that grow along the edges of the fields.
Fireflies
One of the great pleasures of summer evenings are the fireflies that light up the fields.
CONSERVANCY FOREST LAND
85 acres of forrest and wetlands have a permanent conservancy status. It was one of the orginal founding easements of the Kennebunk Conservation Trust given by Nat and Eleanor Grose.
FARM POND
In 1990 the farm pond was drained, dredged, rebuilt & the field regraded. The pond held a very impressive inventory of eels. Fisheries for yellow and silver eels have a long history in Maine, having occurred since the earliest colonial settlements. After spending several years with us, the eels go to the Sargasso Sea to spawn. Catching them is another story!
The pond is co-owned with our neighbor.
SPOTTED TURTLES
The conservation land has many vernal pools, little ephemeral wetlands that fill with snow melt and often dry out over the summer. They are home to wood frogs, spotted and blue salamanders, and fairy shrimp. They are essential habitat to rare species, most notably to Blanding’s and spotted turtles.
DEEP WELL PROVIDING FRESH WATER
Water to the house is provided by a well that was drilled in 2002. Recent water tests show the water is good and contains no radon.
STARRY NIGHTS
Despite street lights, the night sky is dark and the milky way is clearly visible. Because the ocean lies to the east where there is no light pollution, it is thrilling to see stars just slightly above the horizon.
